The College of Education for Pure Sciences at the University of Basrah organized a scientific lecture (entitled: Conducting a comparative study on two species of bony fish belonging to the Mugilidae family, namely
Planiliza klunzingeri (Day, 1888)
Planiliza subviridis (Valenciennes, 1836)
The lecture presented by the student (Karar Hassan Salman) included
To study some histological properties of skeletal muscles (red and white) in the areas R1 and R2 in the body of the above study fish by calculating and measuring the diameters, number and area of muscle fibers, as well as estimating the protein concentration in their muscle fibers using the BCA assay method (Bicinchoninic Acid) as well as estimating the concentration and ratios of Each of the amino and fatty acids in its muscle fibers, which are associated with the kinetic and nutritional activities of the fish of the current study, samples were collected from the Al-Faw area / breakwater within the Iraqi territorial waters during the period between March and June 2022, using the method of fishing by surround and Karfa nets
The lecture concluded
Through the results of the histological study of the diameters, numbers and area of muscle fibers, two positive and inverse relationships were found, as it represents the direct relationship between the diameters of the muscle fibers and their area, while the inverse relationship was between the diameters of the muscle fibers and their area with the number of both types of muscle fibers, and these two relationships are related to the hypertrophy and hyperplasia processes.
And through the values of the diameters of the muscle fibers, their numbers and their area, in addition to some phenotypic effects specific to the movement of the fish, the fish of the current study can be described within the medium or moderately active fishes.
Through the results of protein concentration and amino acid concentration, we can conclude that white muscle fibers have greater concentrations compared to red muscle fibers in the two types studied.
Through the functional role of the three branched amino acids (valine, isoleucine and leucine), they had a major role in the growth process of both types of muscle fibers.
And through the results of fatty acids, we can conclude that the concentrations of acids are greater in red muscle fibers compared to their concentrations in white muscle fibers that are related to motor activity.
Recommended lecture
Conducting comparative studies dealing with the study of some histological characteristics and comparing the area and numbers of red and white muscle fibers in bony fish with different environmental locations due to the scarcity of studies on them.
And conducting more specialized histological studies to know the numbers of mitochondria in red and white muscle fibers in the muscles of bony fish of different motor activity. And carrying out studies dealing with knowing the concentrations of amino and fatty acids in different bony fish, in addition to conducting comparative studies between bony fish and some other vertebrates to find out the similarities and differences in Concentrations of amino and fatty acids in muscle fibers.
Conducting comparative studies dealing with the concentration of proteins in bony fish in ecological locations (marine and riverine)
