In accordance with the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research aimed at enhancing community awareness, the College of Education for Pure Sciences at the University of Basra organized a major awareness seminar. The seminar covered a comprehensive range of topics to discuss the dangers of drug abuse and ways to reduce its spread among different segments of society. The seminar aimed to strengthen the role of educational institutions in disseminating a culture of prevention. The college integrated its academic efforts to address the phenomenon from psychological, health, religious, legal, and social perspectives related to drug proliferation. Targeting undergraduate and graduate students, the seminar focused on a number of key themes presented by lecturers. Among the most prominent topics discussed was drug addiction and its psychological and health effects. Brigadier General Hussein Falih Na'ma, an expert in forensic laboratory and DNA fingerprinting, addressed the main factors leading to addiction and its negative repercussions on the individual, family, and society, emphasizing the importance of guidance programs and psychological support in the recovery process. Meanwhile, lecturer Colonel Ali Mohsen Hamid, Assistant Director of the Basra Narcotics Department, discussed Iraqi laws related to combating drugs and mechanisms for dealing with users and traffickers. He also addressed the role of educational guidance in promoting positive behaviors among youth and preventing their involvement in deviant activities. The seminar further explored the drug trade and its internal and external effects on countries, focusing on the repercussions of smuggling networks on national security, the economy, and society, as well as their impact on international relations
