
The Central Committee for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Safety (CBRN) at the University of Basrah, in cooperation with the Center for Development and Continuing Education and the sub-committee in the College of Education for Pure Sciences, organized a course on (Chemical and Laboratory Safety Seventh) for postgraduate students. The course lasted for four days, and the following lectures were presented in it:
The objectives of the workshop were:
1- Guiding postgraduate students majoring in chemistry about the importance of laboratory safety and how to deal with chemicals. Through a lecture by (Professor Dr. Jassim Muhammad Saleh / Department of Chemistry) (an introduction to the CBRN Committee and safety in laboratories) as well as guiding them in providing research requirements to create a safe environment.
2- Directing students to store chemicals and indicative signs, presented by (Professor Kamel Hussein Alwan / Department of Chemistry).
3- Raising awareness and culture, and reading the MSDS file before starting any interaction, presented by (Dr. Bassam Ashour Rasheed / Marine Science Center)
4- Dealing with dangerous and prohibited materials provided by (Dr. Enas Abdel Aziz Abboud / Polymer Research Center)
5- Training on extinguishing fires through a practical application that was implemented by (Mr. Hadi Abdel Samad / Department of Chemistry)
The workshop was attended by the Associate Dean for Scientific Affairs and the Rapporteur of the Safety Committee, Prof. Dr. Jassim Al-Shawi, and postgraduate students, and that was in the Knowledge Hall of the College of Education for Pure Sciences. A discussion took place between postgraduate students and lecturers about the course’s paragraphs, and the organizers of the course recommended the need to communicate with postgraduate students about all new developments within the department of scientific achievements, and also to find solutions to some of the obstacles they face in scientific research to create a safe environment.
