This study focuses on the classification of algorithms that reconstruct the damaged areas in the image based on the information in the surrounding areas of the damaged areas. This study provides a review of most of the processing methods based on the use of different partial differential equations (PDE) and other various methods used in image processing. The PDE-based methods have been categorized on the basis of order into second order and higher order equations. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of these methods were discussed in terms of their ability to reconstruct large damaged areas, and surrounding areas rich in information.
