The College of Education for Pure Sciences, Department of Chemistry, investigated a thesis on evaluating oxidative stress and lipid profiles in patients with hypothyroidism in Basra Governorate, Iraq. The thesis, presented by researcher Rana Hassan Abdulmajid, aimed to study the significant differences in thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in patients (P<0.001) compared to healthy individuals. It also revealed a significant increase in enzyme antioxidants and lipids (vitamin A, LDL, VLDL, TC, TG) compared to healthy individuals, along with a significant decrease in SOD, GPX, CAT, and Fe. Furthermore, significant differences (P<0.05) were observed in vitamin D and calcium levels compared to healthy individuals.

The study also found significant differences (P<0.05) in vitamin D and calcium levels compared to healthy individuals. When comparing patients by gender, significant differences were found between sick and healthy men, as well as between sick and healthy women, in thyroid hormone levels and in enzyme antioxidant levels. Sick women showed significant differences in vitamin A compared to healthy men, and significant differences in vitamin D compared to sick and healthy men. Sick women also exhibited elevated TSH levels, indicating a higher likelihood of developing thyroid disorders due to estrogen imbalances affecting the thyroid gland. Furthermore, women showed significant differences in total cholesterol and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol compared to healthy women
