A faculty member from the Computer Science Department at the University of Basra publishes research in a Q1 international journal.

Lecturer Mushtaq Hassoun Abdulmutallab from the Computer Science Department at the College of Education for Pure Sciences published a research paper in the journal *Expert Systems with Applications*, published by Elsevier and ranked in the top quartile globally with an impact factor of 7.5.

The research presents an innovative model for classifying cardiac disorders from electrocardiograms (ECGs) using deep learning techniques. It achieved 99.55% accuracy on the MIT-BIH database.

The research was conducted in international collaboration with Wuhan University of Technology in China and Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria, and was published on June 23, 2026.
